In a season of spring-like fashion, a new legislative session is almost here. With the promise of hope and longing for a rebirth, I am instead relegated to the idea that my dreams of a productive legislative session that improves the lives of Alabama’s citizens will, in contrast, wither like the leaves of an autumn tree.
We were promised with the Republican trifecta that occurred back in 2010, things would get better. But like it always does, the bad just gets worse. Well, maybe not worse. There has been some improvement. Alabama has jumped all the way from being ranked 46% in the nation to 44th despite having the nation's 33rd economy.
Why are we not getting our bang for our buck? Look at these numbers. According to USNews.com, Alabama ranks 40th in crime, 44th in education and health care, 36th in infrastructure, and 48th in pollution. Yet, it is 20th in fiscal stability and 32nd in opportunity.
Folks, these numbers do not add up. There is no way we should have these rankings with the tax revenue we are bringing in. We have got to start holding people's feet to the fire, and it has to start now.
Call your State Representative and Senator. As well as the Lt. Gov. and Governor's office and demand accountability. Otherwise, let's "throw the bums out" come 2026
We gave them the right to govern us, and we can take it back by electing fresh faces with new ideas. Send them a message. Go vote.
