You know politics is a contact sport. It is not for the faint of heart. If you're not tough and have thick skin, you best avoid it.
You see, in politics, you have good people, and you have bad people. You have power-hungry people, and you have people who are lusting for money, you have people who think they are too good for others, and then you have just some down-to-earth people that are out to help anybody.
You see, when I first got into this, I had no idea what I was doing, and I'm not sure I do now. But I contacted several people to ask for advice about what I should do. One of the first was Jeffrey Poor, and his snotty attitude wouldn't even return one of my messages, nor would the great Dale Jackson, who seemed for some reason that he needed to anoint himself, Alabama's most trusted journalist. That should tell you all you need to know about somebody if they call themselves by that title. But there was one person who helped me
I can't even remember who told me to give him a call, but they gave me his number, and I did. And I bet I talked to Brandon Mosley for 3 hours on the phone the first time we chatted. He gave me all kinds of advice. He told me where to look for stories. What kind of stories would people like? How to get a press pass and other things like that. And I'll always be grateful to him for looking out for me. Now, l would like to mention I met Michael Hart, who has become a mentor of mine, but I didn't meet him too much later.
That is just a testament to the kind of people Brandon Mosley and Michael Hart are as opposed to the formation people I spoke of earlier. And I have made that a go now that for the little guy running for office that's getting no publicity, I make it a point of trying to interview them and write a story on them. I'm looking to help a little guy because no matter how big you think you are, you don't even register on the radar of human decency if you're not out to help your fellow man. Thanks, Brandon. Thanks, Michael, you all have taught me a lot, and also, I would like to have an honorable mention of Micah Messer. He gave me some advice early on.
